Frequently asked questions
What is a Wayuu bag?
A Wayuu bag (also known as a mochila wayuu) is a traditional handwoven bag made by the Wayuu people, an indigenous community from the La Guajira Peninsula on the Colombia–Venezuela border. Each bag is crocheted by hand from acrylic and cotton thread, featuring distinctive geometric patterns that carry cultural meaning unique to each artisan.
Are Wayuu bags ethically made?
Yes. At Akuaipa Artisans, we work directly with Wayuu artisans and pay a fair price for every bag. We never use middlemen, and 10% of our profits go directly to projects supporting Wayuu cultural preservation.
How long does it take to make a Wayuu bag?
A single wayuu mochila bag can take anywhere from 4 to 15 days to complete depending on the complexity of the pattern and size — a true testament to the skill and dedication of the artisan who made it.
